What is Chessboxing?Chessboxing is a hybrid combat sport where chess and boxing are played in alternating rounds.
It tests both physical discipline and mental composure. Athletes must be able to box under pressure, then immediately sit down and make clear chess decisions while tired, breathing heavily, and managing adrenaline.

Our Training Fundamentals
-
Learn the fundamentals of boxing through stance, guard, footwork, punching mechanics, defence and controlled movement.
Depending on the session focus, participants will work through punch combinations, shadow boxing, partner drills, touch-boxing or shark tank-style pressure exercises. The goal is not reckless sparring — it is learning how to move, strike, react and stay composed under physical pressure.
You will also practise timing and distance through partner-based drills such as shoulder taps and knee taps, where control matters more than force.
-
Train chess decision-making through timed puzzles, tactical positions and simplified game formats.
Each session focuses on a shared puzzle theme across different difficulty levels, from easy pattern recognition to harder calculation. Participants solve under time pressure before the chess coach breaks down the key ideas.
You will also practise clock-based chess drills such as pawns-only games or simplified material battles, where the goal is to promote, win material or survive the clock.
-
The session builds toward a 5-round chessboxing simulation.
You face the same opponent across alternating chess and boxing rounds. One round, you are managing the board and the clock. The next, you are scoring clean hits through controlled boxing challenges.
The simulation follows the rhythm of real chessboxing: chess, boxing, chess, boxing, chess — with short 60-second transitions between rounds.
You return to the same chess game after boxing, which means every mistake, every tired decision and every moment of panic carries forward.
At the end, points from chess and boxing rounds are added, and participants are ranked on a leaderboard.
-
Between training blocks and before simulation rounds, participants practise breathing resets to recover focus and control.
Reset work is a key part of the session because chessboxing is not only about pressure. It is about what you do after pressure hits.
Breathe. Reset. Decide again.

Your Questions, Answered
-
You are required to have basic chess knowledge, but you do not need to be strong.
We will train tactics, time pressure, board awareness and decision-making during class. You just need to know how the pieces move and be willing to learn under pressure.
-
No. Beginners are welcome.
Boxing drills are taught progressively, starting with stance, guard, footwork, punching mechanics and control. You will not be thrown into chaos on your first session. This is training, not a street fight with a chess clock.
-
Yes, chessboxing is a contact sport, but training is structured and progressive.
You will start with fundamentals, controlled drills and coach-led exercises before any contact-based activity is introduced. Contact level depends on experience, readiness and coach supervision.
The focus is not on reckless sparring. It is on learning control, technique and composure under pressure.
-
Each session combines boxing fundamentals, chess training, breathing resets and chessboxing simulation rounds.
You will drill boxing, solve chess positions, practise decision-making under time, then experience alternating chess and boxing rounds.
Think. Fight. Reset. Repeat.
-
Wear comfortable sportswear and bring water, a towel and hand wraps if you have them.
Boxing gloves and basic training gear may be provided depending on the session setup, but bringing your own wraps is recommended.
Full list of what to bring and what not to bring can be found on the google classroom. -
It is a training programme for a legitimate hybrid combat sport.
You will get fitter, but this is not a normal fitness class. ACC Chessboxing Singapore trains both chess and boxing as real disciplines, with the long-term goal of building a proper chessboxing culture in Singapore.
-
For now, ACC Chessboxing Singapore is open to youth & adults aged 18 and above only.
After the first 3 months of running our regular sessions, we will review the possibility of creating a separate kids programme with a format properly catered to younger participants.
